2025's Top 5 Clay Masks for Brighter, Younger-Looking Skin

Updated 06/22/2025

Here's what you need to know when picking a clay mask that actually works.

When our skincare routine needs an extra boost, facial masks have always been a go-to solution. And if a brighter, fresher appearance is your goal, nothing delivers results quite as fast as a clay mask.

But an online search will result in page after page of clay masks, with all sorts of ingredients, clay types, and price points. How do you know which ones will work for you and your skin?

This clay mask guide summarizes all the information you need to make an informed choice on your own. Plus, we’ll also share our 5 top picks of the best clay masks on the market.

A Quality Clay Mask can:

Exfoliate dead skin and remove impurities
Support a firmer, less wrinkled appearance
Help the skin attract and hold in more water
Minimize the look of pores and redness
Promote a bright, smooth, even-toned complexion
Brighten and enhance the skin’s natural radiance

With so many benefits, it’s no mystery why hundreds of new clay masks have exploded onto the market in recent years.

However, not all clay masks are created equal. And unless you know what to look for, you could end up with a mask that doesn't deliver results, or even harms your skin.

For starters, the type of clay used in a face mask is an important consideration.

Bentonite Clay vs. Kaolin clay

Most clay masks use bentonite clay. This common clay is good at reducing excess oils and moisture. But its potent drying properties can also cause the skin to become irritated and even dehydrated.

For people with skin that tends to be more dry or sensitive, we recommend finding a mask that uses kaolin clay. This is the hydrating clay often used in high-end spa treatments. And while kaolin is sometimes harder to find than bentonite, it's a better choice for those who want more hydration and less irritation.

Of course, the best clay masks contain more than just clay.

For maximum radiance and smoothing benefits, find a clay mask that contains additional ingredients that have been shown to work in clinical studies.

Ingredients to Look For

Fruit Enzymes

Enzymes offer gentle exfoliation, without irritating the skin. So, when the mask is rinsed off, dead cells and other debris are removed along with it.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid attracts moisture, helping the skin stay hydrated even after the mask has been washed off.

Vitamin C

Due to its unique antioxidant properties, this key skincare vitamin supports a brighter, smoother look — enhancing the effects of the clay.

Ingredients To Avoid

  1. Synthetic Dyes & Fragrances

Synthetic dyes and fragrances can irritate your skin, clog pores, and cause acne. They can also strip your skin of important nutrients and oils.

  2. Parabens

Parabens are synthetic preservatives that can affect hormone levels and potentially cause skin damage when exposed to sunlight.

  3. Petroleum

Petroleum-based products can't be metabolized and also create an invisible film on the surface that clogs pores and traps dirt and oil under the skin.

3 Must-Haves For a Clay Mask

  1. Transparent List of Ingredients

Some skincare brands fail to list all of their ingredients, which means you might be using a product with potentially harmful chemicals, such as sulfates, parabens, heavy mineral oils, and petroleum.

  2. Long-Term Results

While most clay masks offer an instant boost, not all of them work to improve the skin's appearance over time. For lasting results, look for a clay mask that contains other clinically studied ingredients, beyond clay.

  3. Money-Back Guarantee

Look for a strong, risk-free guarantee that the company stands behind. This shows that it believes in the products it sells

What Not to do When Choosing A Clay Mask:

  1. Forget The Research

Not all clay masks are the same. Brands use different formulas, and some sneak in additives, so check that they contain the ingredients listed above.

  2. Prioritize Price Over Quality

We found that the generic brands tended to fall short in potency. Focus on quality ingredients to avoid compromising your skin.

The Results Are In...

We took all of these factors into account, and after reviewing 91 clay masks, we found the best on the market.

#1: Tru Alchemy Mystic Mask

rating
Tru Alchemy's Mystic Mask
earned our #1 spot because it's a clean kaolin clay formula with additional, naturally derived ingredients.

Mystic Mask contains exfoliating enzymes from raspberry, lemon, orange, and cucumber. Tru Alchemy also uses an activated form of vitamin C that delivers higher potency than most generic versions.

In addition, the formula contains multi-molecular hyaluronic acid, which has been shown to penetrate deeper into the skin. There's also niacinamide, antioxidants, and amino acids — which all support bright, firm-looking skin.

Mystic Mask is free of artificial fragrances and dyes, parabens, sulfates, petroleum, and other harsh chemicals.

Finally, Tru Alchemy offers a 60-Day Money Back Guarantee. We feel that 60 days gives customers enough time to decide if the product is right for them.

#2: Gleamin Vitamin C Clay Mask

Gleamin Vitamin C Clay Mask uses Australian kaolin clay and contains two of the scientifically studied ingredients we look for.

It has vitamin C (from Kakadu plum) and exfoliating enzymes (from fruit). Plus, the formula features turmeric and aloe. This is what earned Gleamin's clay mask our #2 spot.

The one thing missing from this formula is hydration, as it contains no hyaluronic acid. Based on some of the reviews we found, we don’t recommend this mask for people who have dry skin.

Gleamin offers a money-back guarantee, but they only give customers 30 days to decide. So, if you do choose this mask, make sure you test it right away.

#3: Youth to the People Superclay Purify + Clear Power Mask

Youth To The People's Superclay Purify + Clear Power Mask does contain kaolin clay. However, note that they mix it with bentonite clay. It's free from parabens, sulfates, and added fragrances.

Unfortunately, this clay mask is missing some of the scientifically backed ingredients we were looking for. Although, it does contain other quality ingredients, including niacinamide and probiotics.

Instead of enzymes, Superclay Purify + Clear Power Mask uses chemical exfoliants such as salicylic acid. These potent chemicals are able to exfoliate deeper than enzymes. The problem is that they are more likely to irritate and strip the skin.

So, while this mask earned our #3 spot, it may not be ideal for sensitive skin.

Youth To The People offers a money-back guarantee. But like Gleamin, they only give customers 30 days to return the product.

#4: Glossier Mega Greens Galaxy Pack

Glossier’s Mega Greens Galaxy Pack uses kaolin clay and contains several fruit extracts that offer exfoliating benefits.

The formula is also packed with plant extracts, like parsley and spinach. But we were unable to find any research that suggests these vegetables have any effect when applied to the skin. Perhaps that’s why some users said they didn’t notice results.

There are a few good moisturizing ingredients. But  this mask doesn't contain hyaluronic acid, so there's nothing to keep the skin hydrated after washing off the mask.

Also note that there may be trace amounts of vitamin C in the orange peel extract, but we were unable to verify.

These factors, combined with Glossier’s 30-day return policy earned this clay mask our #4 spot.

#5: Tata Harper Purifying Mask

Tata Harper’s Purifying Mask contains kaolin clay, but none of the research-backed ingredients we look for. Its high customer satisfaction score is what earned it a place on our list.

The formula is free from synthetic colors and fragrances.

And it is full of naturally derived plant extracts like broccoli and alfalfa. But again, most of these vegetable extracts have not been clinically studied on the skin. So, there’s nothing to suggest they would have an effect when used topically.

On the plus side, we did notice this formula contains both probiotics and antioxidants.

Tata Harper offers a 30-day return policy. But we were disappointed to see they only allow returns if your jar is still at least half full. We believe that this restrictive return policy doesn’t allow customers to give the mask a fair trial.
